During a Worship Leader training in Idaho in 2010, Bishop Brian Thom asked if anyone had read The Book of Common Prayer all the way through. “Oh, right,” I thought, “who has the time?” It turns out I was not alone; none of the participants had.
As a lay person I never seem to find enough time to study the Prayerbook in any more than a brief survey in Inquirers’ classes. Marion J. Hatchett’s Commentary on the American Prayerbook has been recommended to me many times as a wonderful resource for explaining all things BCP and I haven’t worked that into my study schedule either. I wondered what it would be like to combine the BCP and Hatchett to form a “one-year” format for daily study.
A Year with the BCP is the result of that curiosity. Each day the outline has readings from The Book of Common Prayer and/or Commentary on the American Prayerbook by Marion J. Hatchett. The daily reading concludes with verses from the Psalter.
If you are interested in participating in the study you will need a BCP, a copy of Marion J. Hatchett’s Commentary on the American Prayerbook and the study guide, A Year With the BCP by Stephanie Crumrine. You can order the Commentary through Amazon or at Cokesbury and the study guide by emailing ayearwiththebcp@gmail.com .
